BEAR PAW LAKE!

Finally! After years & promises there is now a new cabin on Bear Paw Lake . Located on the same spot as the old cabin the new one features separate bedrooms (lots of room for 8 persons), large eating/food preparation area, knotty-pine tongue in groove paneling, solar lights, indoor shower with hot/cold running water, huge picture windows on the lake side of the cabin, large screened-in porch, a wrap-around deck overlooking the lake. We have posted pictures on our website (www.kabeelo.com); go take a look at what we have to offer.

  Boat Safety Check List

As of September 15, 2009 "…all operators of pleasure craft fitted with a motor [must have] proof of competency and proof of age on board at all times." The acceptable proof of competency for NON-RESIDENTS "… can be a completed boat rental safety check-list OR an operator card or equivalent that meets the requirements of their state or country." Please be advised that KaBeeLo Lodge will have a supply of the acceptable Boating Safety Check List (BSCL) for your use and they will be free of charge.  ALL PERSONS will complete the BSCL prior to their scheduled departure to the outpost lake. If you wish more information visit:
www.tc.gc.ca/marinesafety/debs/obs/quickvisitor_htm

Kamungishkamo/Jubilee/Gitchie

Just a real quick note to let our customers know the three lakes noted above are no longer fly-out lake options for KaBeeLo – they have been transferred to other outfitters for economic considerations, high cost of outpost upkeep and maintenance, land taxes and increased cost for renewal of the land use permits. In short, we will no longer be flying into Kamungishkamo, Jubilee or Gitchie lakes from KaBeeLo Lodge.

  The Lohn Family

As many of our guests are aware neither our son (Erik) nor daughter (Kristin) are currently working with us at the lodge on a day-to-day basis. The major reason for this shift has been the birth of their children, family responsibilities and shifting priorities  with their employment circumstances. At this early date we are not looking for either of them to be part of the operation in 2010 due to family commitments.

  Ontario Outdoor Cards

For those persons that fished Ontario during the 2009-season application for an Ontario Outdoor Card (remember completing the "pink form?") had to be issued. By now (hopefully) you should have received the card. PLEASE bring it with you on your next fishing trip to Ontario. The card is valid for three (3) years and will be used to identify yourself when you are issued a fishing license (an extra charge). The intent of the card is to “automate” the issuance of a fishing license thus saving all of us lots of time. If your card was lost, stolen or has not been received by the time your read this letter please call 1-800-387-7011 (Ontario Outdoors Card Center). As of this date we don’t know the "in's & out's" of the automated system so call the 800 number shown above  you have any questions.

  Tax Harmonization

The Province of Ontario imposes an 8% sales tax on certain products and services while Canada imposes a 5% sales tax on all goods and services.  Effective July 2010 these separate taxes will be "harmonized" (combined) to allow for a “smoother and more efficient” process of tax collection. This harmonization will be accompanied by an additional sales tax increase of 3% resulting in an overall tax rate of 16%. The good news is the “rebate program” will be extended meaning that about one-half of the taxes paid will be credited back to your invoice. Based upon preliminary calculations this tax harmonization will result in about a $20/person tax consequence. As more information about the program becomes available we will post it on our website. Should you have any questions or concerns about this new process of tax collection please let us know. You will find our telephone numbers, email address or website address at the end of this newsletter.

  Big Fish

Can you believe a 48.5" northern pike? How about several walleyes over 29 inches? These were some of the largest fish caught and released on our lakes during the 2009 fishing season. The Turnpaugh "team" (Florida)  caught & released the largest northern (Jeanette Lake) while others (Jim Swedin/Dead Dog, Todd Kimlinger/Wavell, Doug Senn/Dead Dog) caught & released walleyes in the 29" class.  We would like to THANK each of them for support of our  policy on trophy fish – let'em go and let'em grow. 2009 at KaBeeLo Lodge was another GREAT FISHING SEASON.

  Minor Criminality

Canada and the United States look at the world differently especially in the area of criminality. One example - driving while intoxicated (i.e., DUI or DWI). In Canada it is a felony while in the USA it is a misdemeanor and, accordingly, different penalties apply. Should your background include a DUI or DWI you will want to determine your admissibility prior to your trip. Websites to visit for clarification or information about admissibility would include:  www.cbsa.gc.ca or www.CanadaWelcomesYou.net

REMEMBER:  this is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and, as such, your deposits are not refundable if you are not admitted to Canada.

  2010 Pricing

We recognize 2009 was a tough economic year for everyone, including ourselves. While things have not changed all that much as this newsletter is being written we at KaBeeLo Lodge have held our price increase, on average, to less than 3%. In light of higher insurance rates, staff salaries, food products, fuel prices, etc. we have done the very best we could.  We want everyone wishing to fish at KaBeeLo Lodge in the 2010 season if  able to do so. If there is anyway we can be of special service please let us know and we will do all that we can to make this trip happen.

  Website Changes

Go to our website (www.kabeelo.com) and "click" thru any and all topics of interest to you. On the "contact" page please note that we have a blog where you can offer your input through comments, observations and/or criticism. Become part of what we are all about – making fishing in Ontario Canada and at KaBeeLo Lodge the most desirable destination in NW Ontario.

  And the winner is?

This is a gentle reminder to our customers noting that anyone submitting their email address will be entered into a drawing for a FREE TRIP to KaBeeLo Lodge. The “lucky” person for the 2009  season drawing was Gerald Mowris of Madison, Wisconsin. CONGRATULATIONS Gerald. This is a trip for two persons for the #1 Fly-Out Special that can be taken anytime during our operating season. Since we will be having another drawing for the 2010 season we encourage you to send us your email address so that you, too, can get into the drawing for a free trip to KaBeeLo Lodge.

  Boating & "Booze"

Ontario boating regulations are strict with respects to “drinking & driving” while on the water.  The law states:
  • no drinking while operating any watercraft
  • no open containers in any watercraft
  • no operation of watercraft while impaired
  • can transport alcohol if sealed & in a closed container
  • conservation officers have authority to enforce alcohol laws
Please take every precaution to  see you trip is safe and accident free.  Be aware & take care!

  Life Jackets

Each and every guest is required to have access to a life jacket (personal flotation device, PFD) while on the water.  While it does not have to be worn it must be readily available, fit properly & be certified by the Coast Guard of Canada or other recognized body.  Please insure that each member of the party is equipped with their own PFD. NOTE:  KaBeeLo Lodge does NOT provide PFDs for our guests – it is your responsibility. If, however, you find yourself without this equipment please let us know BEFORE YOU FLY-OUT and we will provide one for you.

  Water System

Each outlet and/or spigot at the MAIN BASE delivers potable water for guest consumption.  Water derived from the lake passes thru two extensive filters, exposed to ultra-violet radiation and then chlorinated prior to deliver in the cabins.

In short, this water is safe to drink.  Water at the OUTPOST cabins is derived, untreated, from the lake.  The options available are: bring bottled water, secure water from the main base, boil the water on site, or, put a few drops of bleach into the water and let stand for approximately 20 minutes.  Using any one of these methods will result in potable (drinkable) water for consumption.

  Canadian Customs & Immigration

PRIOR to arrival at any border-crossing be prepared by having required documentation (e.g. passport, driver’s license, birth certificate, letter of permission, enhanced driver’s license, etc.) readily available for inspection.

Re-entry to the USA will require a passport except for those children 16 years of age or younger.
